A leaky faucet is quite possibly the most common plumbing problem out there. Faucets are used so frequently that it is only natural that the parts will get worn out or deteriorate with time. Because the issue is common, the reason for the leak doesn’t need to be a mystery.

What is Causing that Leaky Faucet and How to Fix it Once And For All

Here are three common reasons why your faucet is leaking and some tips on how to fix the issue:

  • Corroded Valve Seat – The valve seat is what connects the faucet to the spout. If your spout is leaking, then the valve seat is likely the problem. The sediment in water builds up over time and will cause the metal to corrode. When that happens, your faucet will start to drip.
  • Washer Issue– Washers sit up next to the valve seat and are pushed up against it every time the faucet is used. The friction created will eventually wear out the washer. Also, if a washer was installed wrong or isn’t the correct size, those will also contribute to a leaky faucet.
  • Problem With the O Ring– If your faucet is leaking near the handle, the O ring could be the culprit. The O ring is a small disc that is attached to the stem screw and keeps the handle in place. Over time, these can wear out or become loose.

Now that you are aware of what the issue might be, you can choose how you want to solve the problem. There is a lot of information out there to help you fix the problem yourself.
